Frugal Lifestyle - Exercise
Exercise can be costly these days - between the costly gym memberships, fancy
equipment, expensive shoes and expensive work out clothes. Here are some ideas
to keep your costs down.
Walk
Find a school track, local park, or walking or hiking trails. All you need
is a comfortable pa
ir
of shoes and weather appropriate clothing. You don't need to have the latest and greatest
work out wear or shoes. Find a walking buddy and turn it into a social
occasion. You can find lots of walking programs online. Choose one and off you
go.
Add more walking into your daily life. Park the car a little further away
then normal, take the stairs, or walk instead of drive to the local store.
Joining a Gym
Try your local YMCA or other community type centers. To get a great work out you
don't need a fancy expensive gym. If you don't have a local community centre or
Y in your area, shop around and look at what deals the gyms in your area
are offering. They are usually very competitive and will offer new members
different benefits. If you are looking to renew your membership, again
look around and see what other gyms are offering. Use their "new member sign up
incentives" as leverage when negotiating your next year's membership. Most gyms
will negotiate with you to keep your business. One warning. Make sure you sign
up with a reputable gym that has been around awhile. There is nothing worse than
paying for a membership and then the gym goes out of business!
Swimming
Swim at your local community pool. You don't need to buy a gym membership with a
pool to swim. Community pools often offer times where you can swim that is
designated for adult lane swim or part of the pool is designated for adult
fitness swim.
Buy Less Expensive Exercise Equipment
- Use books or other household
objects for weights.
- Look online for exercises that don't need equipment.
- Use the stairs as a stair master.
- Shop around for the less expensive options - buy online or from refurbished
exercise equipment stores.
- Shop at yard, garage or Rummage sales for exercise equipment that hasn't been
gently used or even sometimes never used!
Other Options for Living an Active Frugal Lifestyle:
- Buy Exercise DVD's and Books at Yard Sales or on EBay
- Look at your
local book store in the "sale" section for exercise equipment or
books
- Look for free fitness Info online or at your local athletic store. -
routine ideas etc.
- Look for free classes or go to your community center for cheaper classes.
- Work with a group of friends and take turns leading the workouts
- Find your workout gear online - shopzilla or eBay?
- Learn to monitor your heart rate without a heart rate monitor.
