Tips on Travelling Frugally

Frugal Travel, money management
Frugal Travel has become more popular these days with gas prices soaring. High gas prices lead to higher air fares and costs in general.

If you have chosen to include budget vacations in your money management plan, it can't hurt to be frugal about it. With just a few tips you can save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on your travel plans without sacrificing comfort or fun.

Below are some tips on how to travel frugally from transportation booking hotel rooms, vacation packages, dining out, or road trips.

Frugal Travel - Entertainment

Entertainment is usually why you have travelled in the first place. But it can still be a frugal adventure. Here are some tips:

  • Seek out Free attractions - For example Central Park in New York City is one of my favorites.
  • Find the "Entertainment Book" for the city you are visiting. The cost will most likely outweigh the savings on attractions etc.
  • Research the destination on the web. Look for the top attractions and then research for discount coupons for them.
  • Check on ebay for tickets that people can't use. Look for Time share presentations - you could spend 90 min in a presentation to look at one of the nicest resorts in an area (with no obligation to buy - although there may be a high pressure sales presentation), and get expensive attraction tickets for free or severely reduced prices.
  • Avoid in room movies - unless the alternative is going to the movies with a large group. An in room movie typically costs about $14.99 - a movie at a movie theater can cost more or less than that. So for one person to enjoy the movie it may be too much - but if it is for the whole family it may be a cheap night of entertainment
  • Find 1/2 price ticket booths for Broadway type shows or other attractions- Every "theater" city has them.

  • Get Airline credit from the Airline for future travel. If you are travelling, your flight is overbooked, and you have the time, take a bump offer from the airlines. Airlines will usually give you credit towards a future flight and will pay for your hotel costs (if required).
  • If you have trouble on a flight or getting on a flight (like you get stranded in an airport or city without your luggage), complain to the airline and ask for compensation. Escalate it to a supervisor if you have to.
  • For the extremely frugal (I don't recommend this for a number of reasons - most of which is safety) you could plan your travel where you overnight in an airport. I came across this site in my travels that rates airports for sleeping in. www.sleepinginairports.net.
  • Make sure you have enough travel insurance - Don't skip out on travel insurance to be frugal. It costs a lot more for medical care in a foreign place if you are not insured - it's not worth the risk.
  • Learn the tipping customs of the destination you are travelling to - Some countries don't expect you to tip, some even find it insulting. So save a buck or two.
