Thanksgiving Dinner Ideas and Tips to Saving Money

Thanksgiving dinner ideas and tips how to make this Thanksgiving dinner great and affordable! Check out this great video on 5 Ways to Save on Thanksgiving Dinner.

You don't have to spend an arm and a leg (or in this case a breast or a drumstick) on your Thanksgiving dinner this year. This video shows you 5 ways to save on your holiday dinner plans.

Thankfully food costs aren't escalating like they have been in the past couple of years, however your Thanksgiving dinner can be expensive. Here are Stacy Johnson, from Money Talk News', 5 ways to save on your Thanksgiving dinner:

  1. When you know how many you will be cooking for and what you are serving, go on the internet and find a website that will give you the recipes and will outline exactly what it is you need to buy. Having a list will stop you from buying things you don't need. Have a plan and then follow it
  2. Once you have a list go to coupon sites on line and see what you can buy with coupons. Don't forget to check your local papers too.
  3. If you buy a frozen turkey you can save up to 40% on it. Just make sure you have enough time for it to thaw out - Depending on the size of the turkey it can take up to 5 days to do that
  4. Buy boxed wine. Once you pour it (you could use a decanter) no one will know it wasn't from a bottle
  5. Make your own pies. Look for recipes on line. Apparently pumpkin pie is easy to make.

Bonus tip: ask your grocery store if they match competitors pricing, then you don't have to drive all over town looking for the best prices.

Here are some more tips:

  • Stick with one type of meat - choose turkey or ham not both
  • Don't buy a turkey that is too large for your group - unless you have a plan for more meals throughout the week and you stick to it.
  • Choose cheaper desserts - make your own pies, or choose easy desserts
  • Stick to fresh side dishes and vegetables that are in season
  • Buy frozen vegetables when they are on sale and keep them until the holiday
  • Ask your guests to bring a dish
  • Use coupon strategies. Look for stores that let you stack coupons
