The Truth Behind Your Finances
It's Time to Get Real About your Money!
Are you ready to get real and look at the truth behind your finances?
Before you can move forward and learn money management, you need to face
where you are now and then understand how you got here.
The only way to make any change in your life it to be aware and truthful
with where you are right now; then figure out how you got here.
You got to where you are today because of the habits you formed, or the
rules you have played by.
In the last step you looked at the nuts and bolts, or in this case, dollars
and cents of your money and you may have an overwhelming feeling of dread.
You may blame yourself or beat yourself up about it. I am sure that you
have done this before! It may even be a regular past time for you!
On the other side you may think “wow it’s not as bad as I thought it was!”
Sometimes just not knowing the truth behind your finances makes you make up
stories in your head about how “bad off you are” when it may not really be
true. I can't tell you how many people I have coached that were shocked to
realize that they were not broke! It gives them a great sense of relief!
This is why it is important to find out the truth behind your finances.
Sir Francis Bacon, a 16th century English philosopher, said that
“knowledge is power.” He sure was right! Once you know exactly where you
are with your money you have the power to make a change. Your scoreboard
shows you how much debt you have to pay off, or how much have to earn to
live the lifestyle you want, or what it will take to retire when you
want to. It gives you a starting point.
But the other part of the scoreboard in money management, is figuring out how you got here in the
first place.
Let’s go back to the feelings that may have come up for you while
determining your scoreboard. You may avoid those feelings, or ignore the
little voice in your head. You may let that little voice control your life.
The Little Voice in Your Head
You know what little voice I am talking about. If you are hearing in your
head "What little voice?" or "There is no little voice in my head" - That
is it! That is your little voice.
This little voice can be good for you, or bad for you and your goals. But its
main function is for you to survive in the world. It is there to remind
you of good and bad past experiences, conversations, or lessons learned.
Since the little voice is there for you to survive in the world, it can also
hold you back. It is most likely what got you in debt, and you will have
to work with it and against it to better your money management and personal
finances.
The little voice may make up its messages to you based on things that may
not be true. Getting to the truth of those messages is the only way that you
can make any lasting change. These
money messages can
be about any area of your life. You may hear “I’m too fat”, or “You need
to lose weight”; or “you are a lousy with money” or “you can’t get that job –
they won’t like you”.
It
has been said that we are a “sum of our experiences”. Essentially, the
relationships we have had, the experiences we have had, and our reaction
to them has made us who we are today. The human nature is to survive, and
our reactions usually are what we do to survive any situation.
If this is the case, then the things that we have heard in the past from our
parents or friends about money would shape our reactions to money. For
example, if as a child you saw your parents scrimp and save, you may also scrimp
and save. Or you may have gone the opposite way and you spend and splurge!
The only way to really get to the truth behind your finances is to
determine what these money messages are, to figure out what your little voice is
saying to you. Then reprogram the little voice to work with you to meet your
money management plans and goals.
The next step in the game of managing your money is to find the truth behind your finances and determine what those
money messages are.
