There are many ways teens can make money. The best way to learn to manage your money as a teenager is to have money to manage. That may not always come from mom or dad.

These days as a teen, you will have to find a way to make your own money for the latest fashion or technology, and in many cases, save for your future.

One disclaimer, Teens are getting sucked into the "easy money making for teens online" world just as adults are. In my experience, both online and off there is no "EASY" way to make lots of money. It takes initiative, hard work, ambition and in most cases experience.

Always look for opportunities that are suited to you and safe.

So how can you make money? A Job? A business? What are the advantages and disadvantages? We will explore those on this page.

Ways Teens Can Make Money - Get a Job

This is the best way to gain experience in the "Real World". Chances are that at some point in your life (if not all your life) you will have a job, working for someone else. This is the time and place to learn to be a valuable employee and how to work in the work force.

I know sounds boring - but it doesn't have to be. Look for a job that interests you. If you love music - try a music store, If you love fashion - apply at your favorite store. You love golf or tennis? - Work at a country club. Most likely you will get "perks too" like discounts on their product.

Find a job that you are really interested in. Then learn everything you can. Summer camps or School Break Camps are great jobs too.

Not only will you be making money you will also be learning and gaining experience for the future. Don't flit from job to job because "you don't like it". Prospective employers look for good workers - not fly by nights. They are also more likely to give you a great reference for future jobs.

Make sure before you apply for a job that you have the qualifications. Make sure the the local regulations (i.e. laws) allow you to work at your age and that you have all the necessary paperwork (i.e. social security or social insurance number). If you don't then make sure you get that identification before you apply for jobs.

When looking for a job, go directly to your prospective employer. Many jobs for teens are not advertised. If you get a job where a lot of your friends hang out, remember that you are there to work and not "hang out". Tell your friends that and ask them to respect that you are working.

Ways Teens Can Make Money - Start a Service Based Business

Many teens start freelance or service type businesses. This is the type of business where you sell your time and skills yourself. Advertise your services in the local grocery store or on flyers around the neighborhood. Tell everyone you know what services you can offer. This will get your name out there!

Some of the more common ways teens can make money are baby sitting or lawn mowing. Here are some more ideas:

• Pet Sitting or Dog Walking - Neighbors that go away or work all day are always looking for people to take care of their pets.
• Working for your Parents - odd jobs around the house or for their business - Ask your Parents friends too
• Lifeguard or swim teacher - Makes more money then most other jobs and you can take these skills with you to college - keep up those swimming lessons!
• Tutoring - you could make $5-$20 an hour if you are good at tutoring!
• Create Websites - good with the web - great way to make some extra money.
• Run errands for neighbors - especially the elderly or young parents
• Teach people about technology - How many "older" people do you know that can't work their cell phone?
• Be a photographer - are you good with a camera? - offer your services for family pictures or events.
• Have rummage sales - find other people that want to sell stuff but don't' want to do the work and sell it for them for a portion of the sale price.
• Car Detailing - take the "Car Wash" further and offer detailing services in your customer's driveways!
• Part Time Nanny - Take care of kids before and after school - Get the kids to school, bring them home from school and take care of them till their parents get home.
• Painting homes or house numbers on curbs
• An Artist? - offer services of designing logos for new companies
• Pet Grooming
• Cleaning Houses
• Cleaning out Basements

If you are having a hard time finding a job or creating a business, then volunteer. You will learn invaluable skills and qualifications that you can take with you when you apply for a job in the future. Some volunteer opportunities include: working at a Veterinarian's office, Hospital or even intern at companies you are interested in learning more about.

Once You Make the Money - Now What?

Learn to manage it! I am sure you have heard the adults in your life talking about debt and the economy and you may see them stressing about money. The majority of this stress comes from not learning how to manage their money. This isn't something they teach you in school. So learn now!

Once you start making your money - make sure you make a plan to manage it. Spend it - but Save it too. In fact pay yourself first. You will be amazed at how much you can save if you start young!
