Why Go Green? Because You Can Save Money and Help the Environment

This video by CBC News with Kelly Grant from SmartMoney.com shows you a few ways to save money, instead of spending money by going green.

Why Go Green  - Ways to go Green and Save Money

Being Earth-friendly is beneficial to the environment with a side benefit of saving you money. Ways to go green include, recycling, using sustainable energy, and reducing material. This will add up to a lot of savings over the year.

Recycling
Reusing plastic bags, paper, and bottles may seem to have small value, but in the long run, imagine how many dollars you’ll save on containers, new reams of paper, and more.

Upcycling
The new trend is upcycling—where something is turned into something better. You can actually sell your scrap metal, bottles, or other material for it to be turned into more useful items. For example, schools are being built out of plastic bottles which are just as durable. Some businesses even take old, used, or broken items and turn them into trinkets or accessories, thus saving on variable costs.

Reduce
Our carbon footprint grows everyday with the amount of energy we use. The best way to lessen the damage done is to find ways to save on energy. Carpooling to work with a co-worker will cut gas costs in half (or more depending how many you are) and get at least one car off the road. Public transportation may also be a less expensive way to get to work and it will help cut emissions.

Turn off appliances and lights when not in use. In fact, unplugging items will reduce an electric bill up to 20%. The standby mode of appliances when plugged in still consumes electricity even when it is not in use.

Alternative energy
Having a solar energy system will enable you to produce your own electricity and hot water. Sure, there’s an installation and product fee, but solar panels pay for itself over and over. Not to mention that you can say goodbye to your electric bill.

All in all, these methods among others will ensure that money is saved and the environment is preserved. They may be lifestyle changes that are challenging to adjust to but will ultimately be helpful in many ways.
